MY WORKSTAY EXPERIENCE IN A W.A OUTBACK PUB.........................
When I first accepted a Workstay Outback Pub placement I had an absolute panic attack and wondered what the hell I was doing. I had never worked in a pub before and then I arrived in the middle of nowhere. As far as the eye could see there was just bushland and nothingness. But the funny thing was that after 6 weeks I fell in love with the place and had one of the best experiences of my life!!! The bar work was brilliant, the landlady, Wendy, treated me like family and what a laugh we had! The locals were hilarious - mainly sheep shearer's, gold miners and farmers.
I was taken out sheep shearing & even had a go myself! I also climbed in and out of several real goldmine's.
I say to anyone thinking about the Workstay Country Pub Program - that it is the best way to experience real Australian life and meet true blue Ozzies (and make some life long friends). GO FOR IT!!!

The 6 weeks I spent living and working in a Workstay Outback pub were the absolute highlight of my travels so far…Getting to grips with my first bar job was made much easier by the fantastic locals and a very much hands on training approach. The work itself was good, although the best piece of advice I got was certainly to remember that there is always work to do, even when the bar itself seems quiet. By keeping busy, working hard and maintaining a positive attitude the work was made much more fun for me too! By the time I finished I could’ve given Tom Cruise a run for his money in the shooters department… well nearly! Outside work, the wonderful locals went out of their way to make me feel welcome. As a result I was thrilled to be taken cray-fishing, horse-riding, motor-biking, snorkeling, midnight fishing (and impromptu rally driving!), sleeping in swags, swimming off idyllic beaches and much more besides (not to mention a few sore heads along the way!). The highlight for me had to be hand-feeding the baby Joey which was being hand-reared by a local – an awesome experience I shall never forget. All in all, to sum up the Workstay experience, I would recommend it 110% to anyone who wants a taste of the real Australian culture and its amazing people. If you’re willing to work hard and play much harder, I’m certain you’ll have as unforgettable a time as I did –

It can be almost impossible to save money as a traveller working in a big city, and the jobs on offer are often the type you could be doing back home, or are of the 'loser type' e.g. charity collecting, commission sales etc .. often the casual hours aren't enough to save, or the overhead costs of accommodation, travel (to and from work) and the temptations to 'go out' and spend your hard earned all add up to make a 5 to 12 week Workstay in an Outback Country Pub a very attractive alternative. Not only will you get to save some money, but also, you will definately get to meet 'the locals' and some real characters. As well, you will get to experience - " Real Australia".
If this sounds like something you would like to do then all you need is a reasonable command of the English language, a positive work and play ethic, a sense of humour and a minimum of 5 weeks availability. You don't even need to have previous bar experience. We have lots of Workstay's and at least one will suit 'even you'.
If you already have bar experience and are available to Workstay longer than 5 weeks, then we may be able to help find you a placement that will enable you to save even more money.
Like the ever growing number of Working Holiday Makers who have given it a go, you could be embarking on one of the best times of your travels.
Testimonials At the very least you will have tried something completely different, met some characters, visited somewhere that you otherwise wouldn't and saved some money. At the very least you will have had a True Working Holiday Experience in Outback Australia.
So from wherever you are or whatever time of the year it is, head over to Perth Western Australia and into the ICP - Workstay office and let us embark you on what may possibly become your 'best ever travel experience'.

Some frequently asked questions

  1. How soon can I get a Workstay? Once you have arrived in Perth and we have met you and you have met us, and if you don't have two heads, we would usually get you going from within 2 days to 2 weeks. If however you do have two heads, it may take us a little longer. It always depends on whats available when you are. Workstay's reputation is based on us 'not sending you off to just anywhere'.
  2. How much will I earn? Your basic take home (in hand) will be no less than $350 per 35 - 40hr working week, plus, you get your accommodation (own room) and all meals provided as part of the package. Some Workstay's can pay substantially more depending on previous experience, time availability etc.
  3. How do I get there? Usually travelling to your Workstay is via the government run bus or train network. Sometimes a lift may be organised or for further afield destinations there are other bus companies and for really remote destinations the pub may fly you. Most Workstay's are within a radius of 500klms from Perth and travel to these places will cost on average between $20 and $100. Often the pubs will reimburse you the cost of travel out after you have completed the agreed 'minimum stay'.
  4. Are Workstay's for females only? Barmaids are an integral part of Outback Aussie culture. Though some Workstay's will take guy's and couples the Country Pub Barmaids Program is essentially for females.
  5. Do I need previous Pub experience? No! In fact this is another great thing about Workstay's i.e. you get to learn something new and by the end of your Workstay Pub Experience you will be an experienced Bar and Hospitality person which will hold you in good stead wherever you go for further work ...
  6. What if I don't like it? No drama's, it usually takes at least a week to settle in but after that, if you just don't like it, then we have an easy escape plan, plus, if you wanted to try a different Workstay, then still no worries...Workstay has been designed to be Win Win for everyone ...
  7. Can I do more than one Workstay? Absolutely! ... in fact more and more of our Workstayers have done as many as four placements and loved them all ...
  8. Do I have to pay a Membership or Administration fee to Workstay? No!
